           The deterioration of Sino-Indian relations in the context of the broader Sino-Soviet-Indian triangular relationship set the stage for negotiations on the Sino-Indian border. China sought to resolve the dispute in an attempt to maintain cordial relations with India as a counter balance to the growing Soviet threat to China. Boundary settlements with other South Asian countries–Burma, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan–which were concluded between 1960 and 1963, must be understood in the broader context of the regional balance of power concerns of China.
