Concluded in 1962, this settlement illustrates the centrality of China’s concerns over increasing Soviet hostility and its willingness to compromise in order to reach a boundary agreement. It was a clear attempt by China to develop better Sino-Mongolia relations in order to offset the Soviet threat. Because of Mongolia’s historical relationship with China, this settlement also demonstrates how flexible the Chinese can be when more fundamental security interests are at stake.
